Abortion and Miscarriages from a Medical QiGong Perspective

One of the most sensitive subjects that I have come across in my practice is the energetic implications when a woman has an abortion. To be clear, this article is not a judgement on that choice at all. Additionally, and more energetically important, is if the women felt at the time as if she had no choice but to abort the child. However, what I see happening in clinics is that frequently there are emotional scars, and trauma associated with the decision and the follow through to having an abortion. My intention as a Doctor of Medical QiGong and Naturopath is to bring light to a very sensitive subject without judgment - with the foremost purpose of helping women who have undergone these energetic changes and offer them an option that might have never been presented to them before.

Often, if a women comes into clinic with symptoms of feeling bloated, pain, distention or restless sleeping habits, she may not even think that it is related to having had a miscarriage or abortion, say five or ten years prior. At Inner Strength, my clinic, I have witnessed: depression, chronic fatigue, insomnia, eating disorders, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and many autoimmune disorders appear years later. From my clinical experience here at Inner Strength, I have observed that most women begin to notice these changes in their late thirties to early forties.

I think that it is a fair statement to say having an abortion triggers a myriad of powerful emotional responses. Often, if this energetic emotional response is not dealt with in a satisfactory method, the far-reaching health implications begin to manifest long after the abortion. Likewise, when there is profound psychological trauma, there can be what Spanish Sufi, Iban Arabi, called "our enormous capacity for self-deception." In other words, our own self-talk in dealing with trauma can be equally devastating.

To be clear, we believe that emotions carry an energetic charge and that charge is influenced by the Yi or mind. These manifestations result from the energetic stasis that occurs when the foetus Qi becomes “stuck” after the abortion. It becomes stuck as the Jing aspect is removed without being in synch with the Qi (intent) of the foetus. Remember that Qi is a communication medium between Shen and Jing and that upon conception all three of these are in place.

Miscarriages are slightly different in that, from a Daoist point of view, the fetus chose not to have this life. The fetus can, with the help of Wujingshen (the five spirits), see his or her life in complete detail and understanding, and up to the age of three months decide if; in fact, he/she wants to experience this life or not.   I realize that this is a unique perspective, which comes from my research of many different cultures.>>

Most of the emotions the mother feels whether consciously or subconsciously such as guilt, the sadness and the pain of loss, are what is trapped in the tissues at this time, the Qi of the fetus. Usually, when I discuss this aspect with a woman it becomes very endearing to her, in that frequently there is a host of emotions attached to the mother as if she did something wrong to hurt her baby and that it is her fault for the miscarriage.

Energetically, the Liver and the Kidneys usually become affected, but I have observed Lung, Brain and the other Curious Organs affected as well.  Remember that the eight Curious Organs in Chinese medicine are the Uterus (bao), the Brain (ni), Gallbladder (dan), Bones (gu), Blood Vessels (mai), and Marrow (sui). These curious organs have an affinity to the Eight Extraordinary organs which manifest in the first four cell divisions upon conception. That being said, we can see the implication for the mother from the energetic pathways that follow through the umbilicus or the Lower Dan Tian.

Clearly we are talking about the origin of life for mother and child here, and for the mother to understand - to live fully you must decifer your own origin and return back toward your origin or the Dao. The return to the origin is another way of saying to master you own spirits; specifically the first cradle of Hun, Po and Shen. In my tradition, Yu Qing Huang Lao Pai, this is said to be the first trinity of life.

This cultivation, or the mastering of your own spirits, is important for each and every one of us, but especially so for the healer. In the Su Wen, Chapters 15 and 46, it states that as a healer, if you are unable to affect these spirits, you cannot truly cure any patient as they cannot be in sync with their own rhythm and nature of life. Thus, the importance of self-cultivation is paramount when working with the energetic world and using your own vessel as a means to transport/manipulate another's energy with the objective of healing. In truth, the microcosmic orbit, or the cultivation of the Ren and the Du, is about self-examination and finding ones true purpose in life.

Obviously, western medicine would view these implications in a very different way and would not see the link between them. The Chinese Health Professional is trained to sense the energetic link between the physical self, the mind and the spiritual self as being inseparable, but transmutable energies. Moreover, not only are these energies transmutable within each of these energetic resevoirs, but move, affect, empower, or disempower the others. Stated aother way, these are the computer programs and subprograms constantly running in the background of our daily lives. Cultivation, such as meditation and QiGong, become a way of learning to write new and interesting programs into our walk on Earth.  These important life choices intrinsically affect another living landscape - the meridian energy system.

The energetic world of how energy moves through the body is so fascinating and unique, because everyone's meridians are unique to them. The landscape of the meridians constantly changes resulting from our choices in life. These choices affect the mapping and locations of meridians as our decisions change the pathways. The meridian system was never meant to be static, for that would imply death, but to constantly evolve and grow into an enlightened being, albeit the physical aspects of the body may decline. Therefore, at any given time, the meridians will be different on every person and the acupoints that follow those meridians will change as well.

That being said, the huge changes within the body from conception to delivery will have enormous energetic adaptations within the system of the mother. Below, I will outline the basic energetic embryological structure of the 10 lunar months of pregnancy according to Dr. Chao Yuan Fang[1] :

Month 1)              LV Channel            Menses Stop, energies combine at conception>>

Month 2)            GB Channel            Embryo infused with Jing, Qi converts to amniotic fluid>>

Month 8)            LI Channel            HT is harmonized with breath, Earth Jing is accepted>>

Month 9)            KD Channel            KD channel controls the energetic intake from the umbilicus>>

                                                        Energetic boundaries completed>>

Month10)            UB Channel            spatial cavities around major organs completed, >>

Heaven and earth settle into baby's Lower Dan Tian,>>

                                                        Birth begins

After an abortion, the energetic foetus can become trapped within the lower Dantian and cause energetic diversion to surrounding tissues until the energy is released. Consumption can occur while the woman notices enormous fatigue, foggy thinking and depression. I personally have seen the hips rotate and lock down or more accurately chronic psoas, Quadratus Lumborum and lumbar attrition take place leading to multiple musculoskeletal disorders of the back and hips including ground substance obstruction, fascia pain, nodules and swelling.

Assessment techniques vary depending on how one is trained, but commonly the Chinese health practitioner will use the Gallbladder meridian to access the situation. The logic of this since the Gallbladder is a primary channel but also a Curious Organ and the communication between the Curious Organs and the Extraordinary Vessels. We can see this would be a valuable energetic pathway to sense and feel.

Releasing the trapped energy takes advanced training and cultivation in Shengong techniques by the clinician as well as foundation Medical QiGong training that in turn insures that no further damage is done to the meridian system or to the storage systems of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels.

Additionally, counsiling needs to be set in place, so that once the trapped energy is released - the emotions, thoughts and suppressed feelings can be worked through and discussed in a safe and comfortable place. The safety of this discussion is most important, as this can be a vulnerable time that will affect the women the rest of her adult life.

As you can see this is a process, not a one-time treatment or a simple dosage of herbs, but a journey that will take time. However, what better way to spend your time than by following your true destined path and uncovering things about yourself that will ultimately lead you back to the One, God or the Divine.

I wish there would be more healers who had this mindset. I think that much of the aftermath trauma for the woman is that our society is ready to brand her a criminal or demon if she has chosen the abortion, for whatever reason. Even as a woman who has not faced this situation, I feel the message is very clear in our society that our bodies and our capacity to make these types of decisions are not really ours. Having dominion over my own body to me seems a most basic right. So, I think that finding the safe space to heal in this situation isn't always available.
Thanks for providing the safe space to learn, heal, and discuss.
